A work made of pen and black ink, ruled in graphite, on cream wove paper.

Untitled (People Looking Up)

1949

Saul Steinberg American, born Romania, 1914-1999

United States

Steinberg was an acute observer of The world, and he often employed unusual perspectives, such as in this drawing, which presents a bird’s-eye view. The artist’s characteristic visual wit is also expressed in the figure’s odd body shapes (a product of the strange point of view), and how the subjects scrupulously inspect us as we gaze at them.
