Joel Meyerowitz American, born 1938
United States
In late summer 2001 Joel Meyerowitz was preparing an exhibition in Provincetown, Massachusetts, that featured his photographs of lower Manhattan taken from the window of his studio on 19th Street. Five days after the destruction of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, Meyerowitz returned to the city, determined to make a historical record of the tragedy. Securing the cooperation of firefighters, police officers, and construction workers at Ground Zero, he became the only photographer with unimpeded access, and spent nine months documenting the wreckage and recovery efforts.
