A work made of color woodblock print; artist’s proof.

Surface K.I. - 3

1987

Yoshida Ayomi Japanese, born 1958

Japan

Yoshida Ayomi printed this work with only three colors, which she layered to produce more colors in the finished print. It comes from her Surface series of the late 1980s, which was based on photos she took of the Kanda River in Tokyo. The initials in the titles refer to different parts of the river. “K.O.” stands for the Kanda River in Ochiai (middle stream), and “K.I.” refers to the Kanda River in Inokashira (upper stream). The river has great significance for the artist, as it flows past where she lives now as well as where she was born.
