Anticipation (Uchinarumono)

1961

Yoshida Chizuko (Japanese, 1924-2017)

Japan

The thick brushstrokes of orange and black in this print evoke Japanese calligraphy. Its Japanese title, Uchinarumono, roughly translates to “internal,” but the artist wanted to express a feeling of anticipation. In 1961 Yoshida Chizuko had two small children, two and three years old—perhaps she was thinking about watching them grow up.
