With Tigerman’s characteristic humor and irony, the Lifeguard Station nods to its prospective client with two large wheelchair wheels on the exterior and a handicapped flag rising from the top. Tigerman developed the project as part of a competition for the Kirsten Kiser Gallery in Los Angeles, in which 13 other architects participated, including Hans Hollein, Aldo Rossi, and Cesar Pelli. While some of the entries were purely whimsical, this proposal was actually buildable. Designed for use by a physically disabled lifeguard, the tower also accommodates an able-bodied lifeguard. With the tower situated in the water, the bridge with wheels connects the tower to the beach.
