Kukje Art Center Schematic Design Models

2011

SO–IL (American, Founded 2008) Florian Idenburg (Dutch, born 1975) Jing Liu (Chinese, born 1980)

Stemming from ideas that evolved in the small conceptual models, SO-IL refined the idea of wrapping the angular shapes of the functional building elements to unify these disparate forms as one. These two schematic models explore the wrapper as a unifying skin to develop a continuous surface. In addition, they were considering how the project could be integrated not only within the gallery campus but within the urban fabric of the neighborhood. Using paper and fabric to explore possible solutions to contain the forms projecting from the gallery space, these models present the beginning concepts of an articulated exterior surface that later defines the building. The model on the right led to the final solution: a pliable fabric, made from stainless steel, stretched across the forms of the building.
