Kukje Art Center Concept Design Models

2011

SO–IL (American, Founded 2008) Florian Idenburg (Dutch, born 1975) Jing Liu (Chinese, born 1980)

Focused on the function and simplicity of the traditional gallery space, SO-IL centered their studies for the Kukje Gallery with the traditional white cube as the nucleus to their project. All of the other functional elements of the building such as the entry, elevator, and stairs grew from the gallery space. In the series of conceptual models seen here, the rectangular form of the gallery space is privileged as the firm tests out a series of configurations to develop the program. Notably, the emergence of an exterior veil to hold these blocks together leads to the later schematic models that explore the relationship of the forms to the perimeter space.
