SIMPLICITY (Japanese, founded 1998) Shinichiro Ogata (Japanese, born 1969)
Shinichiro Ogata’s collection of biodegradable tableware for Japanese company Wasara brings lyrical forms and an eye for sustainability to everyday disposable tableware. Made from rapidly renewable materials such as reed pulp, bamboo, and bagasse—a post-industrial recycled material that is a by-product of the sugar refining process—this collection of single-use dishes and drinking vessels is 100 percent biodegradable and compostable. The organic lines, elegant curves, and natural textures not only add aesthetic interest to the largely standardized forms of disposable plates and cups, but are also designed for comfortable ergonomics and improved functionality.
