Francisco Gomez Paz and Paolo Rizzatto’s Hope Chandelier is a modern interpretation of a classic chandelier, traditionally constructed from tiers of crystal or glass refracting a single light source into hundreds of smaller fragments. The designers updated this design by using lightweight contemporary materials that can reflect light from any type of natural or artificial light source. In order to improve upon the heavy, fragile nature of glass, Gomez Paz and Rizzatto engineered a series of thin Fresnel lens “leafs.” Glossy on the exterior, the lenses have a textured internal surface crafted using imprinted microprisms on polycarbonate film. When illuminated, the lenses produce the visual effects of solid glass, but without its limitations in terms of space, thickness, and weight.
