One of the foremost Chicagoans of the 20th century, Burroughs at earned a BA and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The African American experience in Chicago was her perennial focus, and here she took on a universal subject—family. Notably, the artist cofounded the DuSable Museum of African American History in 1961 with her husband, Charles Gordon Burroughs. The Leadership Advising Committee of the Art Institute honored Burroughs with the Legends and Legacy Award in 2010.
