Demons Teasing Me

1895

James Ensor Belgian, 1860-1949

Belgium

Ensor was a member of the Belgian avant-garde group called Les Vingt (The Twenty), but was expelled in 1889 for his controversial painting Entry of Christ into Brussels in 1889 and for ideas that became divergent from those of the group. Ensor developed a peculiarly macabre outlook and often employed, as here, the imagery of tormenting demons and taunting skeletons.
