The K-12 Art School for Chicago

2008

Sung Suk Yoo Korean, born 1980

Korea

This project imagines a K–12 school for arts and visual culture located on the remaining parcel of unoccupied space between the Art Institute of Chicago’s historical building and Modern Wing, spanning the railway tracks. Drawing on the resources of the museum and Millennium Park, the building also promotes an active learning experience, merging classroom, studio, and circulation space in a continuous ribbon within the organic structure. Yoo suggested the growth of the students in this cooperative environment as a vigorous vine incorporating a great variety of different disciplines. Sung Suk Yoo is an architectural designer at Gensler Los Angeles and is currently working on the mixed-use Yongsan International Business District Project in Seoul, South Korea.
