Dental Molds

October 1982

Andy Warhol American, 1928–1987

United States

Teeth began to appear in Andy Warhol’s artworks in the 1960s, and he amassed a large collection of dental molds and tooth models in the 1980s. This image is one of several that Warhol made after he purchased a set of dental molds from a shop in Manhattan in 1982.

An avid photographer, Warhol especially liked Polaroid cameras because of the rapid results. In addition to creating portraits of himself and visitors to his studio and parties, Warhol used photography to create a visual diary of things that interested him.
