Matsukawa Hanzan 松川半山 (Japanese, active 1850-1882)
Japan
This set of four volumes represents a valuable record of the travel and poetry culture of 19th-century Japan. In these volumes, poets of all types contributed poems on the meisho, or famous sites of Japan, and artists from all schools were asked to provide illustrations. Thus, artists as diverse as Tosa Mitsubumi, Kishi Gantai, and Mori Kansai joined in the project, becoming part of a larger cultural community on paper.
