Untitled

Martin Puryear American, born 1941

United States

In 2001, when Puryear returned to printmaking with a renewed focus, he produced this curious image of two skeletal shapes. In 2014 he completed sculptural versions of these two forms—one monumental, and the other using new materials and color.

The quality of the naked line—here made with soft ground etching—comes close to approximating the crumbly, rich marks he achieves using Conté crayon.
