In observance of its 75th anniversary, the Chicago Tribune announced in 1922 its plans for an architectural competition to design "the most beautiful office building in the world." The $100,000 competition elicited 264 entries from around the world. The winning entry, a Gothic-inspired tower designed by Raymond Hood and John Mead Howells, was built at 345 N. Michigan Avenue in 1923–1925. One of the honorable mentions went to this entry by Japanese-American architect Richard Yoshijiro Mine, who used the Woolworth Building as a source of inspiration for his design.
