Buncheong ware from the early Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), like the examples in this case, inspired Lee Kang-hyo to make Globular Vase. As earlier artists have done, Lee used a flat brush (guiyal) to apply white slip, or liquified clay, to the surface of the vase—but instead of creating a decorative design, he covered it with unplanned, overlapping strokes. This modern interpretation of buncheong features the same basic shape and materials seen in Flask with Fish, with the addition of dynamic motifs that the artist traced with his fingers or a bamboo knife.
