Queen Luise enjoyed enormous popularity in Prussia as a symbol of resistance to Napoleon, becoming a cult figure after her death in 1810. The Berlin sculptor Johann Gottfried Schadow created five different versions of his official portrait of Luise, both before and after her elevation to queen in 1797. This bust was derived from the final version and cast by the Werner Foundry in Berlin. Its opaque black patination reflects the fashion for bronzes in the 1820s.
