Germany
Grosz contributed nearly 100 illustrations to an edition of Alphonse Daudet’s escapist fantasy Tartarin of Tarascon. The protagonist of the novel, Tartarin, fantasizes about running away to Africa. Sitting in his room reading James Fenimore Cooper’s The Last of the Mohicans, he is ready for a make-believe battle. As the visions of lions, tomahawks, swords, and ships dance in his head, he cries out, “I wish they would come!”
