Summer Night Harbin (Xiaye-Haerbin)

1998

He Weimin 何为民 Chinese, born 1964

China

In this monochrome woodblock print, He Weimin depicted a bustling street on a summer night in Harbin, a city in the far northeast of China. He experimented with form and space: Each subject dissolves into individual forms reminis-cent of Chinese paper-cut art. The scene illustrates China’s rapid economic growth and urbanization at the turn of the millennium. Note the man in the center right, carrying a child on his shoulders and wearing a Chicago Bulls jersey.
