Tubular Skirt (Sarong)

1900/25

Lasem and other locals, Java, Indoneisa

Java

This special type of sarong is called a tiga negri (three regions or cities) in reference to the fact that the drawing and dyeing were executed at three different locations known for particular expertise. Production was often initiated at Lasem, on the north coast, where the main ornamentation was drawn and the famous local red dye was applied. This was followed by additional stages (at both north coast and central Javanese locations) involving other colors, including indigo and soga brown.
