Hip Wrapper (Kain Panjang)

Cirebon, like most of the north coast batik production centers, has a hybrid culture owning to its role as a seaport and its mixed population of Arabs, Chinese, Indians, and Javanese. The batik designs of Cirebon reflect these influences as well as the old local court style. Theis hip wrapper is a classic example of H. Mohammad Masina's revival of traditional motifs using new combinations, diverse color schemes, and superior workmanship and finish. Note in particular the Chinese motif of layered rock and coral, the tree of life from shadow puppet tradition, the rooster heralding the dawn of Islam, and Hindu nagas and Garudas.
