Onchi Kōshirō Japanese, 1891-1955
Japan
Onchi Kōshirō sometimes made monochromatic prints like this one as a way to explore the properties of a single color and its capacity to create a certain mood. Here, the pigment within each black square has a depth and texture that is more commonly seen in paintings. The dark forms block the printed image below, perhaps to convey the absoluteness of the color.
