Vessel Fragment

Mamluk dynasty (1250–1517), 14th–15th century

Islamic; Fustat (now Cairo), Egypt

Old Cairo

This ceramic dish fragment was made using sgraffito, a technique in which an artist applies colored slip or glaze to a piece of pottery, then incises it to reveal the contrasting color of the clay underneath. The decorative pattern incised in the brick-red clay features interlacing vine stems with bifurcated leaves, a common Mamluk motif.
