Myron Kozman American, 1916–2002

United States

This abstract image is a chemigram, which is made by dripping chemicals directly onto photographic paper that is subsequently exposed to light. This and nearby chemigrams were created by Myron Kozman, one of the first five graduates of the New Bauhaus (later the Institute of Design) in Chicago. Already trained in painting and screenprinting, Kozman stumbled across the school on South Prairie Avenue on its opening day in 1937 and enrolled immediately, drawn to its emphasis on technical and material experimentation. After completing his studies and serving in World War II, he returned in 1946 to teach.
