Renard Koehnemann (American, 1918–1999)
Chicago
Chicago silversmith Renard Koehnemann’s practice consisted mainly of custom-designed, hand-forged chalices and patens for newly ordained priests. In accordance with his philosophy, each chalice is different yet expresses a contemporary aesthetic. A student of Daniel Pederson of Chicago’s Kalo workshop—the city’s premier source for handwrought silver wares in the first half of the 20th century—Koehnemann achieved elegant expressions of modernity through simple forms and the use of contrasting materials.
