Seament/Cement, Self-Portrait in Mabou

September 1979

Robert Frank American, born Switzerland, 1924–2019

United States

While living in Mabou, a settlement on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Robert Frank experimented with writing phrases directly on his negatives before printing them. Works from this period have a diaristic quality and speak to an artist contemplating his place in the world. This pair of photographs, a shadowy self-portrait and a seawall, create a visual and verbal pun with the word cement.
