These French fashion plates illustrate the European taste for imported luxuries, particularly from Southeast Asia. In addition to wearing a Kashmir-style shawl, the woman depicted in the plate on the right wears a dress trimmed with so-called “Rubans Turcs” or Turkish ribbons.
