Hospital Boats Torpedoed by the Germans

1918

Unknown Artist printed by Imprimerie Berger-Levrault (French, 20th century)

France

This poster commemorates hospital ships that were torpedoed or otherwise sunk by the German navy. At the top, a hospital ship plunges below the surface, while lifeboats paddle away and survivors swim for their lives. A crew member on the conning tower of a German submarine fires a handgun, while another mans a deck gun directed at the flailing survivors. Below this, 12 illustrations of ships memorialize hospital ships of all nationalities destroyed during the war.
