Marie-Gabrielle Capet (1761-1818) was a student and disciple of François-André Vincent and Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, two artists who later married. Capet lived with the two outside Paris, managing their home and holding Vincent in her arms when he died in 1816. An idealized portrait drawing of Capet, by Vincent was copied in this color engraving by Gilles-Antoine Demarteau, who was part of a Parisian dynasty of ornamental engravers famous for chalk-manner prints.
