Bridge Over Canal, Amsterdam

1906

John Marin American, 1870-1953

United States

In this Amsterdam view, Marin emphasized the reflections in the water, as Whistler had done when depicting this city of picturesque bridges and winding canals. Using vertical columns of small horizontal lines, enhanced by wider, richer marks of the drypoint needle, Marin conjured the sensation of light and air playing across gently rippling water.
