Sherril V. Schell American, 1877–1964
United States
Sherril Schell began photographing around 1910 and became known as a portraitist before exploring the play of light on urban architecture. His photographs appeared in such magazines as International Studio, Vogue, and House Beautiful, and in the 1930s he was included in photography exhibitions at the Julien Levy Gallery in New York. A writer as well as a photographer, Schell spent several years in Mexico and made portraits of many artists, including the Surrealist painter Rufino Tamayo (who was also exhibited by Levy later in the 1930s). In correspondence with Schell, Edwards pointed to this portrait as one of his favorites.
