Athens to Memphis

1984

Doug Huston American, born 1949

United States

Doug Huston’s work has long been characterized by a pronounced tongue-in-cheek wit that is heavily indebted to Marcel Duchamp and the spirit of Dada. This screenprint’s comparison of an idealized portrait of Elvis Presley and a Hellenic sculpture of Apollo epitomizes the artist’s fascination with the role and significance of cultural icons in our society. He joined the SAIC Printmedia faculty in 1976 and has also taught at Ox-Bow.
