Yasuhiro Ishimoto Japanese, born United States, 1921–2012

Japan

While studying under Harry Callahan at the Institute of Design in Chicago, Yasuhiro Ishimoto acquired a love of street photography, and the city, from his teacher. In this student work, he shows a woman observing the landscape of beachgoers; her modest sundress, hat, and stockings contrast starkly with the swimsuit-clad crowd. By separating this central figure and photographing her from behind, Ishimoto invites viewers to inhabit the woman’s position as surveyor of this Chicago beach.
