In 1922, Margaret Burroughs moved with her family from Louisiana to Chicago’s South Side. She was instrumental in establishing the South Side Community Art Center, and in 1948 she completed her Master of Fine Arts degree at the School of the Art Institute. Soon after, she traveled to Mexico to study printmaking; there she was particularly influenced by the powerful graphic style of Leopoldo Méndez.
